Sowing the Seeds of Victory…American Ingenuity and Persistence

The battlefields of the First World War (WWI) were the fertile farmlands of France. German soldiers forced the French people to the brink of starvation. That's when American ingenuity battled back with food from American farmers. In order to provide U.S. troops and our French allies with the sustenance required to maintain their strength and vitality, posters urged citizens to reduce consuming meat, wheat, fats and sugar. Slogans such as “Food will win the war” encouraged eating fresh fruits and vegetables, foods too difficult to transport overseas

The following story also has a great moral about ingenuity and is a perfect teaching moment for children and grandchildren…and even young adults!

A CROW, half-dead with thirst, came upon a water Pitcher; but when the Crow put its beak into the mouth of the Pitcher he could not reach far enough down to drink. He tried, and he tried, but at last had to give up in despair.

The Crow thought and thought. Then a flash of ingenuity came to him, and he took a pebble and dropped it into the Pitcher.

  • Then he took another pebble and dropped it into the Pitcher.
  • Then he took another pebble and dropped it into the Pitcher.
  • Then he took another pebble and dropped it into the Pitcher.
  • Then he took another pebble and dropped it into the Pitcher.
  • Then he took another pebble and dropped it into the Pitcher.
  • Then he took another pebble and dropped it into the Pitcher.

At last, at last, he saw the water mount up near him, and after casting in a few more pebbles he was able to quench his thirst and save his life.

The moral: Ingenuity and persistence is the American way!
